Hi everyone! If you happen to come into the shop on a Saturday or Sunday and wonder who is sitting in Sarah's seat its me, Rachael, He and She Vintage's first intern! I'm a Buisness Management major at West Chester University. Instead of sitting in cubeland completing a boring corperate management internship it is my job to sit in Sarah's seat, educate myself on the latest trends, talk about clothes, and make cool outfits all while recieving college credits! I couldn't have asked for a better internship. Plus I get to learn from an amazing inpedendent woman who did it all on her own. So anyway, Fall is here which means stockings (and being able to pull off super duper short dresses), boots, and coats. Here are some trends for the season I love.

Our friend Marty does some amazing work and he will be bringing a plethora of small ink prints which will be on sale for $5 each, or 4 for $20! I plan on collecting his entire Black Icons series and getting them framed - how amazing will that look in my new apartment! A few months ago, a student from The Art Institute of Philadelphia popped into my shop and asked if I could help out with a photography assignment for one of her summer classes. I love when projects are proposed to me, especially by young, ambitious women! I'm always ready to lend a hand, even though time is not something I have too much of.

Bouncing into Graceland

Yesterday I bolted out of farm country and chain-smoked my way to Philadelphia (easier said than done). I met up with my 'adopted' brother, Phil, and called up my busiest city-friend, Murph. We sat in Rittenhouse Square Park with coffees, dodging errant frisbees and catching up on gossip while trying on each other's vintage sunglasses. After a few hours of lounging, we stopped off at Murph's and made cocktails of Pimm's with cucumbers, light and delicious. Off to Tria next, we drank more summery drinks - think Belgian beers and sparkly Rose - and then went off to do a little gayborhood dancing - perfect.

Yikes - a whole month has passed since my last post. My most sincere apologies - life has been hectic - lots of farmers market work, hunting for vintage, moving, etc - but no excuses!

One of my customers, Shannon, was kind enough to send me some belated prom pictures - I had this dress up in the window for just a few short days and many, many girls ran in to try it on - but it was a perfect fit for this pretty lady. As you can see, she accessorized it well with a pair of perfect shoes and an equally adorable date! I'll be stocking up with more of these for next year, so don't pout, just plan.

Speaking of C, we were given free reign of the most beautiful farm I've ever laid eyes on. So, I rallied the troops - K, A, and photographer Beth Erisman - and set up to capture the beauty of women, the outdoors, and of course, vintage clothing straight from He & She.

i think i've mentioned before that i have not one, but four!!, jobs. one of them has lead me to take a role as the newest farmers market manager in kennett square - wonderfully fullfilling with great people surrounding me at all times!

i also headed to philly this past wednesday to see one of my favorite bands - sure juror - at the khyber. they totally killed it - and then killed an amp, i think, because the show had to cut out a bit early! all ended up well though, with the whole lot of us curling up on couches at the bands apartment and laughing at life's absurdities. maybe i'll see you at the next show!

it's been six months that i've been open at the shop! happy halfbirthday to me.

it wasn't the best or most opportune time to open a little fledgling like mine, but business has been steady, i've got some great people coming in regularly, and i hopefully have started to wedge myself into kennett culture. i think i've steadied myself and have been able to spend some quality time with those i love, and i hope to be able to continue this for another six million months!

as you know, i have an etsy shop for all the vintage clothing i don't have room for in the shop

me!

one of my favorite things to do on a slow day is browse the entirety of etsy, and if i'm feelin' lucky, i usually buy a few things. etsy is easy to use, affordable, and entirely handmade/vintage - recently, i've made a few purchases that i am *so* thrilled with! they are also things that you should probably invest in, as well :)

valentines day is coming up, and the boyfriend and i are fairly broke - christmas, weddings, showers, birthdays have eaten us up and finally spit us out - so we put a $15 valentines day price limit on this year. we're both fairly creative, so this isn't worrysome in the least - i bet we both get a delicious homemade dinner out of it, too! i was browsing etsy and stumbled on NeatThings, a little shop filled with handmade cards. they're biting, witty, snarky and perfectly expressive.

did you see the price? eight bucks. EIGHT DOLLARS. with shipping, my total came to $8.59. according to my calculations and figuring in my $15 budget, that means i still have $6.41 to go valentinesdaywild with! hell, i can buy a cheap bottle of champagne with that and call it a night. so, the perfect valentines day - check!

i've been bogged down financially, but that doesn't mean the world stops spinning, does it? of course not! this past sunday was my little sisters twenty-third birthday, and i had to send her something special. the sister is very hard to buy for - she's pretty high maintenance, but low key at the same time - everything about her crosses something else out and usually leaves me sending something generic from anthropologie.

still riding the retail high from my NeatThings purchase, i decided to get her something for her house. small, sweet, green - something to give the cold and wintry days in colorado a little bit of a springtime feel.

2009 marks my 25th birthday - eep!

i was googling the date, february 5, and was pleasantly surprised to find that my very favorite actress, laura linney, shares the same birthday! i love when things like this happen.

every single one of her movies i have watched religiously - congo (5th grade), the truman show (any chance it's on tv, oddly enough mostly in hotel rooms), love actually (i actually hate that movie now), the life of david gale (which someone stole from my dvd case in college - bastard), the squid and the whale (nothing beats a little boy smooshing splooge on library books!), etc.

after i close the shop, i run across the street to my second job - just a few nights a week - to talula's table. i worked there for a few years where i tried my hand at cheesemongering - one of the best jobs i've ever had. i love the shop, but i love getting into the swing of things in the restaurant world at night - a perfect combination for me!

talula's is pretty popular - and intimate, with a full time staff of servers counting in around 10.

i was, and still am, an avid reader. i always loved a fantasy, and fell oft in love with the young girls in peril. i was on team lucy (the chronicles of narnia), team sophie (the bfg), and most of all, team ozma (the wizard of oz).

l. frank baum actually wrote an entire series based upon the trials and tribulations of dorothy. one of my favorite characters was named ozma - the elusive princess of oz! she was beautiful and intriuging and something about her has always stayed with me - i even got a large tattoo of her on my arm. (hi mom!)

her ephereal gowns and hairpieces were gorgeous - she was first introduced in 1904 - and was definitely a big nod to the art nouveau beauties of the same time. check out these amaziiiing illustrations!

holiday traditions

I think every family have their sacred holiday traditions - going to midnight mass, packing up the car and driving cross-country to see family, going to the movies, etc.

My little sister (not so little anymore at almost 23) and I have a tradition that goes back at least 15 years - sleeping in the same room on christmas eve, waking earlyearlyearly just to run downstairs, dump the stockings, check out the goodies, fill them back up, and go wake our parents up before 6am.

Yes, i am almost 25, and no, it does not get old.

During christmas day, we lounge and snack on peanut butter fudge that mom makes, and watch three movies - order doesn't matter - Sister Act (one or two, either is fine), Wayne's World, and White Christmas. (Added Christmas Bonus Points for unintentionally catching one of the Brady Bunch Christmas shows! Amaaaazing.)

When we were little, we used to dance around the house and pretend we were the stars, faux-sisters Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. I was Rosemary (she was the older sister, obviously more wise) and Katie was always Vera-Ellen (she was younger, and both were thin as a rail - sidenote, Vera-Ellen had the smallest waist in Hollywood at 21". Eep!)

...After so many years of watching this movie, I think I understand where my love of day-dresses and shirtdresses stems from. I still have a closet full and am slowing parting with a few (check out the shop from time to time, www.heandshe.etsy.com)

it's been a week or so since i've posted - balls.

i was just about to pull together a rad montage of influences on the big screen (thanks youtubes! xo!) BUT I WAS TOTALLY SIDETRACKED.

i was thinking, david bowie, then i was thinking clueless (i love the plaids, and i'm pretty sure the winter coat i just bought was cher's)

i find myself taking cues from old photographs of strangers. the way they dressed, wore their hair, laced their shoes, held their gloves just so. . . it can speak volumes if you listen.

happy halloween! i hope to see great pictures from my friends all around.

the boyfriend & i went as jfk & jackie kennedy. teased hair, blood spattered faces, fake chanels. the whole get-out. and, it looked pretty freaking fly. if i do say so myself. pictures to come!

in honor of the last few days of fall, i decided to pull over on the side of the road and take some pictures of one of my favorite chester county places. it's just this little random spot, but whenever i drive by it, my heart fills up with happiness and possibility. i'm going to keep photographing the same spot every month and look back at how much it changes with the seasons.

i had a visit from my little sister this week - she was crashing at my parents in DC, and now she lives in colorado! we made some new window displays, arranged fall flowers, and found a vintage light-up spinny-globe! uh, USSR = vintage.

things that i love.

SADDLE SHOES i got my first pair when i was super little, for a sock hop in the late 80s. i remember having a totally hot poodle skirt & these great pink & white saddle shoes. . . and then, we were forced to take our shoes off. cause, you know, of the "sock" half of the hop. what the f, what a waste of amazing shoes in public! i just realized that i'm still mad about that.

oh well - i bought some on ebay this week and they are AMAZING. i'm gonna wear them all the time.

the woman, because she is a) a sight for sore eyes, b) really cool in that ' you still sort of creep me out ' way, and c) is tied between her relationship with v. gallo and the size of her shorts. both equally impressive if not short in length of time/space.

the line because it always seems completely wearable, even when it's totally not. the clothes always make you uber-confident, you know, like one of those days when you wear this crazy concocted outfit and your friend is all, "uh, you sure about that?" and you're like, "fuck yes i am!".

i also sort of love their fall 08 coats. . . even though some look like the abominable snowmonster from the rudolph christmas movie. i love that movie, and i love the coats. win-win.

ohblast. must go get dinner out of the oven, i smell possible bad news coming from the kitchen. finish later.

it's been a long, long while

well, i'm still alive - barely. i'm being overdramatic, but it feels like lifetimes have passed since i last posted! the store is opening next week, and i'm lollygagging around, waiting for construction to be finished so that i can move all of my clothing & etc. finally, an apartment without clutter!

i've been reading a lot of blogs (um, in between all of the busy&important things i've been doing) and i vow to keep up with this like a 9th grader discovering xanga! more pictures, more stories, more ideas, pretty much. . . more. of it all!

I've been a busy little bee lately, working working working. New items will be posted this Thursday, April 17th after an all-night photo session in Philadelphia. I'm waiting for a rolling rack and mannequin bust to come in the mail, so I can organize and dress that fake bust up. . . I wonder how many times I'm going to leave that in the living room and stumble on it on my way to a late nite pee. . . I might have to banish it to a closet during the midnight hour! eep.

Anyway, I was drooling over this picture of Judy Garland when she was little:

isn't she beautiful? i would love to get my hands on that dress - such a great, simple piece. although, i'm not much for matching bows. . . she still totally works it, though. It's almost warm enough to wear a dress here in PA - I better get my summer clothes out of storage asap!

Beep beep!

I am starting a vintage clothing boutique in Southeastern Pennsylvania, hopefully by the end of summer. I'm not too concerned with the exact date - things happen, and I want to take my time and do things right. We're early on in the business stages, doin' the plan and askin' for the dought, pretty much. We just opened our very own Etsy shop

and so far, so good! Three items sold in the first 15 hours of business, and that's pretty reassuring. I know this is the right choice - it's just, well, maybe other people can agree with me!

I had a lovely few days in the city with J & A. We had he & she vintage's very first photoshoot, with the help of J, S, L, D and M. So far, my friendly models (or modely friends) have been outstanding, and I'm hoping to work out a schedule for the next few months that gives me time to travel for new clothing items and taking pictures and enjoying the process. I want to be able to devote my mind as well as my time to he & she vintage, I just have to see if that monetarily is a) sound or b)totally batshit crazy. Let's hope for a, shall we?

I'll be able to keep this updated with upcoming items, special information, and most of all - outtakes. I'm gonna need something to laugh at before I go sit in front of The Man and ask him for quite a pretty penny. If you've got some sugar for me. . . sugar daddy, bring it on!
